Renato, come definiresti la REX Design e da dove nasce la passione per il wrapping?
Renato, how would you define REX Design and where does the passion for wrapping come from?

Renato Borghi:
Rex Design nasce da una passione per la grafica e il design Automobilistico quasi 20 anni fa, è una azienda versatile sempre in evoluzione alla ricerca di nuovi materiali e tecniche da poter applicare nel campo del design.
Questa è la nostra filosofia che ci pone all’avanguardia nella realizzazione di nuovi progetti, sempre diversi che variano dall’automobile al furgone alla barca fi¬no ad arrivare anche agli aerei di linea.
Rex Design born from a passion for graphics and automotive design almost 20 years ago, it is a versatile company always evolving in search of new materials and techniques that can be applied in the field of design.
This is our philosophy that places us at the forefront in the implementation of new projects, always different, ranging from cars to vans to the boat up to and including airplanes.

Tra i lavori che hai fatto c'è anche la Duster in serie speciale Strongman, un lavoro fatto direttamente per Dacia Italia che ha visto la creazione di una serie speciale limitata di 100 esemplari personalizzati, nel 2017. Come è nato questo progetto?
Among the works you have done there is also the Duster in the Strongman special series, a work done directly for Dacia Italia which saw the creation of a special limited series of 100 customized units, in 2017. How was this project born?
Renato Borghi:
Il progetto Duster Strongman è nato dalla collaborazione con altri colleghi. Renault Italia selezionò 10 team di Wrapper per realizzare 100 Duster in 7 giorni. Fu un progetto molto interessate anche perché ci permise di conoscere altri colleghi e soprattutto di conoscere nel dettaglio il design della Duster.
The Duster Strongman project was born from the collaboration with other colleagues. Renault Italy selected 10 Wrapper teams to prepare 100 Dusters in 7 days. It was a very interesting project also because it allowed us to meet other colleagues and above all to get to know the design of the Duster in detail.
Fina Alessandro:
Hai lavorato anche su altri Duster?
Have you worked on other Dusters too?
Renato Borghi:
Spesso nella nostra azienda si presentano clienti con Duster, chi per decorare fiancate o cofani e, in alcuni casi, anche per progetti più complessi.
Clients often come to our company with Duster, some to decorate side panels or hoods and, in some cases, even for more complex projects.
Fina Alessandro:
Tu stesso guidi un'auto, una Toyota, che è un capolavoro di personalizzazione. Come è nata questa idea?
Even you drive a car, a Toyota, which is a masterpiece of customization. How did this idea was born?
Renato Borghi:
Il Progetto nasce da uno studio approfondito delle linee della macchina e rispecchia quello che è la nostra idea di personalizzazione, considerando che in origine la macchina era blu con il tetto nero. E’ la dimostrazione che non ci sono limiti nel nostro lavoro, ed è un esempio di come la gra¬fica venga studiata a fondo per far risaltare il progetto nella sua complessità. Queste grafi¬che nascono con la collaborazione del disegnatore Paul Crocker per un videogioco della Play Station che su sua autorizzazione ci ha permesso di creare qualcosa di unico.
The project was born from an in-depth study of the lines of the car and it reflects our idea of customization, considering that originally the car was blue with a black roof. It is the demonstration that there are no limits in our work, and it is an example of how the graphics are studied in depth to bring out the project in its complexity. These graphics were born with the collaboration of the designer Paul Crocker for a Play Station video game which, with his authorization, has allowed us to create something unique.
Fina Alessandro:
A volte per personalizzare un'auto secondo il proprio carattere basta veramente poco, come nel caso delle personalizzazione delle calotte degli specchietti. Come vengono scelte le immagini e come vengono poi trasformate nel lavoro finale a partire dalle richieste del cliente? Quanto può costare un lavoro di wrapping su una coppia di calotte degli specchietti?
Sometimes it takes very little to customize a car according to our feeling, as in the case of mirror caps customization. How are the images chosen and how are they then transformed into the final work starting from the client's requests? How much can a wrapping job cost on a pair of mirror caps?
Renato Borghi:
Inizialmente cerchiamo di capire il risultato che vuole ottenere il cliente.
Le calottine degli specchietti sono molto in voga ultimamente e grazie alla stampa digitale possiamo permetterci di utilizzare qualsiasi immagine ci possa piacere. A volte è solo un cambio del colore giusto per dare un tono che si differenzia dal resto della vettura.
Comunque si comincia dalla scelta dell’immagine che successivamente viene inviata ad un plotter da stampa ecosolvente che stampa l’immagine su uno strato di base in PVC specifico per Car Wrapping.
Dopo aver atteso qualche ora che l’immagine si sia asciugata, tramite una calandra viene applicata una lamina lucida oppure opaca (in base ai gusti del cliente) sullo strato di base stampato, come protezione per gli agenti atmosferici e protezione ai raggi UV.
A questo punto la nostra immagine è pronta per essere applicata e, utilizzando un termosoffiatore andremo a conformare la pellicola alla nostra calottina stando attenti a non creare pieghe e bolle.
Il costo parte da 60 euro per una coppia di calotte degli specchietti ma può variare in base al materiale utilizzato o alle dimensioni.
At the beginning, we try to understand the result the customer wants to achieve.
Mirror caps became very popular nowadays and thanks to digital printing we are able to use any image we like. Sometimes it's just a change of the colour just to provide a different tone from the rest of the car.
Anyway, we start with the choice of the image which is subsequently sent to an ecosolvent printing plotter which prints the image on a specific PVC base layer for Car Wrapping.
After waiting a few hours for the image to dry, a glossy or opaque foil (according to the customer's needs) is applied to the printed base layer by means of a calender, as a protection against atmospheric agents and UV rays protection.
At this point our image is ready to be applied and, using a heat gun we will shape the film to our cap, being careful not to create foldings and bubbles.
The cost starts from 60 euros for a couple of mirror caps but can vary according to the used material or the size.

Spesso si sente parlare di Wrapping. Ma come si concretizza un lavoro di Wrapping a partire dalle richieste del cliente?
We often hear about Wrapping. But how does a Wrapping job take shape starting from the customer's requests?
Renato Borghi:
Inizialmente si parte dalla idea del cliente, cercando di capire quale sia il risultato che si aspetta, poi si passa alla fase grafica (se necessario). Con un programma realizziamo un rendering della vettura per poter presentare il progetto in tutti i suoi dettagli. Per finire si passa alla scelta dei materiali e, in questo caso, subentra molto la nostra esperienza nel consigliare al cliente materiali e ¬finiture adeguate alla sua idea.
At the beginning we start from the customer's idea, trying to understand what the expected result is, then we move on to the graphics phase (if needed). With a software we create a rendering of the car in order to present the project in all its details. Finally, we move on to the choice of materials and, in this case, our experience takes over a lot in recommending materials and finishing suitable to the customer's idea.

Il Wrapping può essere fatto con vari materiali. Ci spieghi le differenze e i vantaggi di un materiale rispetto a un altro?
Wrapping can be done with various materials. Can you explain the differences and advantages of one material over another?
Renato Borghi:
I materiali per il Wrapping nei ultimi 10 anni si sono evoluti tantissimo raggiungendo qualità e ¬finiture eccezionali. Le pellicole variano dal cambio colore al PPF (PAINT PROTECTION FILM), pellicola adesiva protettiva anti-sasso trasparente che ci permette di preservare le parti che sono più soggette al danneggiamento come Paraurti e cofano da graffi e piccoli sassi. Eccetto qualche materiale acquistabile su internet di ignota provenienza, i materiali sono simili e la scelta viene fatta dal wrapper in base alla posa. Per quanto ci riguarda, utilizziamo prodotti 3M e ORACAL da tantissimi anni.
Wrapping materials in the last 10 years have evolved a lot, reaching exceptional quality and finishing. The films vary from colour variation to PPF (PAINT PROTECTION FILM), a transparent anti-stone protective adhesive film that allows us to preserve the parts which are most subject to damage such as bumper and hood from scratches and pebbles. Except for some material that can be purchased on the internet of unknown origin, the materials are similar and the choice is made by the wrapper based depending on the installation. As far as we are concerned, we have been using 3M and ORACAL products for many years.

Fina Alessandro:
Quanto dura un lavoro di Wrapping completo di una macchina?
How long does a complete Wrapping job on a car last?
Renato Borghi:
Dare una scadenza al nostro lavoro è difficilissimo. Le aziende che producono i materiali normalmente danno una garanzia di otto anni, ma attenzione non fraintendiamo. Otto anni sono la garanzia che il loro materiale manterrà la sua integrità e colore. Ci sono veicoli che abbiamo fatto più di 10 anni fa e ancora oggi circolano e sono perfettamente identici a come li avevamo consegnati al tempo.
Presso il nostro centro si possono acquistare anche dei prodotti per la cura, dal polish al prodotto per lavare oppure per rimuovere resine o altre impurità. Consigliamo sempre di evitare rimedi fai da te che potrebbero danneggiare il materiale.
Giving a deadline to our work is very difficult. The companies that produce the materials usually provide an eight years warranty, but beware, let's not get it wrong. Eight years are the guarantee that their material will keep its integrity and colour. Vehicles are present which we made more than 10 years ago and still circulate today and are perfectly identical to how we had delivered them at the time.
At our centre you can also buy care products, from polish to washing products or to remove resins or other impurities. We always recommend avoiding do-it-yourself remedies that could damage the material.
Fina Alessandro:
Quanto un cliente poi vuole rimuovere un wrapping, probabilmente sarà preoccupato per la difficoltà della operazione e della tenuta della vernice sottostante. Cosa succede se si vuole togliere un wrapping?
When a customer wants to remove a wrapping, he will probably be concerned about the difficulty of the operation and the status of the underlying paint. What does it happen if you want to remove a wrapping?
Renato Borghi:
La rimozione del wrapping in se’ non è un’operazione complessa, purché ci si affidi sempre ad un centro specializzato, meglio a chi ha fatto il lavoro in precedenza. La vernice sottostante non subirà alcun danneggiamento e risulterà molto brillante in quanto non essendo rimasta a contatto con la luce del sole, il trasparente non ha subito ingiallimenti e gli eventuali segni si percorrenza (sassolini e piccoli graffi) scompariranno con la rimozione della pellicola. Cosa molto importante, le pellicole per wrapping, dopo la rimozione, non lasciano alcun residuo di colla se vengono rimosse in modo corretto.
Removing the wrapping itself is not a complex operation, as long as you always rely on a specialized centre, preferably the one that has done the job previously. The underlying paint will not suffer any damage and will be very bright as it has not remained in contact with sunlight, the transparent paint has not undergone yellowing and any signs of travel (pebbles and small scratches) will disappear when the film is removed. Most important thing, the wrapping films, after removal, do not leave any glue residue if they are removed correctly.

Perché conviene fare un wrapping della macchina?
Why a wrapping a car is convenient?
Renato Borghi:
Il wrapping ci permette di rendere unica ed esclusiva la nostra macchina senza spendere un capitale, e soprattutto cosa molto importante il Wrapping è una protezione reversibile e ci permette di riportare la nostra vettura alla colorazione originale senza alcun problema.
Wrapping allows us to make our car unique and exclusive without spending a fortune, and most important thing, wrapping is a reversible protection and allows us to restore our car to its original colour without any problem.
